Today we’ll be talking about Artists from history and now.
It’s not just for art lovers, because you can also learn about some of the world-famous ones from history while reading this.
But first, let’s see if you can guess which artist is famous for what:

Famous Artists from History
Because we know that you’re a big fan of Mixed Media, let’s first take a look at one of the most famous artists from history:
1. Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art for its vivid colors and emotional impact. The Starry Night, painted in 1888 is one of his most famous paintings and it definitely shows why he is so famous! His other works include Sunflowers or Potato Eaters, among many others.
2. Wassily Kandinsky (1866 – 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited with painting the first purely abstract works as early as 1910. Kandinsky’s painting, Composition VII is an example of this famous artist’s work which makes him a big fan favorite.
3. Claude Monet (1840 – 1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement’s philosophy of expressing one’s perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. He is a master at using colors in his artwork! His most famous pieces include Water Lilies or Saint-Lazare Train Station in Rainy Weather.
4. Willem de Kooning (1904–1997), was a Dutch American abstract expressionist artist who practiced in New York City from the 1940s onward. Willem de Kooning’s Women, painted in 1953 is still considered to be one of his most interesting paintings.
5. M.C Escher (1898 – 1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. The Waterfall, designed in 1960 is just one example of this famous artist’s work which can also be seen on jigsaw puzzles, t-shirts or even tattoos!
6. Max Pechstein (1881 – 1955) was a German expressionist painter known for his thickly applied paint and intense coloration. Among the artists, the most important works are A Village Street in Winter or Horses Running Through a Field.
7. Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer and businessman. He is one of the greatest artists in history! Among his most important works are Les Demoiselles d’Avignon or The Old Guitarist.
8. Jacob van Ruisdael (1628 – 1682), was a Dutch landscape painter. Along with his brother, he pioneered new realist techniques in painting that allowed greater naturalness to be expressed in painting than had ever been before. His famous piece is entitled View of Haarlem which you can see in many art galleries around the world!

1. John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) was an American artist, widely considered to be the greatest portrait painter of his generation. He painted many famous pieces including Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose which is also known as Madame X. You might have seen it on t-shirts or even in tattoos!
2. Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985), was a Russian-French painter who is associated with modern art and Jewish culture. Among his most well-known works is Cirque which you can see at the Museum of Modern Art or The Poet which you can see at the Art Institute of Chicago.
3. Hilma af Klint (1862 – 1944) was a Swedish-Austrian painter who is famous for painting abstract landscapes as part of her spiritual journey. Her most famous piece is entitled Synthronos, shown above – it’s one of those pieces that you see on t-shirts or even tattoos!
4. Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918), was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. He is known for his paintings, murals, sketches and other objets d’art.
5. Romare Bearden (1911 – 1988) was an American artist born in Charlotte, North Carolina. His artwork is often described as surrealist, abstract and pop-like using images from mass media such as newspaper headlines or jazz album covers as well as traditional fine arts elements such as paint strokes or bejeweled shapes which you can see in his piece Beads.
6. Diego Velázquez (1599 – 1660), was a Spanish painter who is one of the most influential figures in art history. He remains as one of the most important painters to this day and created many famous works such as Las Meninas or The Maids of Honor which you can see here!
7. Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944) was an early practitioner of both Cubism and Neo-Plasticism, two movements that are widely regarded as artists’ movements rather than schools or styles within Western art. His most famous work is entitled Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue which you can see here!
8. Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895 – 1983), is best known for his work as an inventor, architect and futurist who is associated with the geodesic dome which you can see here!
9. Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) was a Mexican painter who had many different influences including political symbolism, ancient Mexican art, painters such as Fransisco Goya, Diego Velázquez and Rembrant Van Rijn among others. Her most famous piece is entitled My Birth which you can see here!
10. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988) was an American artist whose artwork often incorporates political, racial and pop culture references. His style was influenced by the graffiti movement of the early 1980s as well as street art and other cultures including ancient African civilizations shown above in his Untitled piece.
11. Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) was an American artist who was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but moved to New York City during the 1960s where he gained much criticism for his work that showed life garnered from popular culture that included soup cans, celebrities and advertisements among other things which you can see here!
Mixed Media art made by artists from all over the world has definitely influenced our culture since it began. Artists like these allow us to express our feelings through their symphonies of colors and shapes!
